Bedford School 13+ Admissions Guide

Situated in Bedfordshire, Bedford School is an independent boarding and day school for boys aged 7 to 18. Renowned for its heritage, rowing programmes, and strong academic pathways across both A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB), Bedford welcomes around 100 boys into Year 9 each year.

Understanding the 13+ Entry Process

Registration should be completed while candidates are in Year 5 or early Year 6.

Stage 1: Registration & ISEB Pre-Test (Year 6)

  • ISEB Common Pre-Test: Candidates take the online ISEB pre-test during the autumn term of Year 6 at their primary or prep school. The test measures Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English, and Mathematics.

  • School Report: Admissions officers evaluate pre-test performance alongside a detailed academic and personal report from the candidate's current headteacher.

Stage 2: Assessment Visit & Interview (Year 6 or Year 7)

Shortlisted boys attend an Assessment Day at Bedford School:

  • One-on-One Interview: Candidates meet with senior staff or Housemasters to discuss their academic interests, wider reading, and sporting or artistic pursuits.

  • Interactive Group Tasks: Practical activities measuring team communication, logic, and leadership potential.

  • Offers & Year 8 Confirmation: Conditional offers issued in Year 6 are confirmed via Year 8 Common Entrance or academic scholarship examinations.
