Sutton Grammar School: Mastering the SET and Stage Two
.png)
Sutton Grammar is part of the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) consortium, but passing the initial test is only the first step. For a boy to secure a place, he must prove his merit in the school’s own more challenging second-stage assessments.
The Entrance Assessment: Exact Format
The process is split into two clear milestones:
- Stage One (The SET): Held in mid-September, this is a shared multiple-choice test for the Sutton grammar schools. It features an English paper (testing spelling and comprehension) and a Mathematics paper based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
- Stage Two (Sutton’s Own Exam): Boys who meet the qualifying score are invited to sit the Stage Two exam in October. This consists of a 1-hour English extended writing task and a 45-minute Mathematics paper. Crucially, these are not multiple-choice. The Maths paper is designed to test logic and the application of knowledge to unfamiliar, non-standard problems.
Strategic Preparation
Exceptional Academics is a leading London tutoring agency providing expert, bespoke educational services to pupils in the UK and internationally. We understand that Sutton Grammar is looking for boys who can handle "open-ended" Maths. We work with our students to ensure they are comfortable showing their mathematical logic on paper, which is the key differentiator in the second stage.
