City of London School (Boys): Logic, Literacy, and Potential

Located on the banks of the Thames, City of London School (CLS) offers a vibrant, urban education. Their 11 plus entry is notoriously competitive, focusing on boys who demonstrate strong logical foundations and a high degree of literacy.

The Entrance Assessment: Exact Format

The admissions process at CLS is structured across two main academic hurdles:

  • Stage One (ISEB Common Pre-test): All candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-test in the Autumn term. This digital assessment covers English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

  • Stage Two (School Assessments): Candidates who meet the required standard in the Pre-test are invited to the school in January. This involves two 45-minute written papers: one in Mathematics and one in English. The Mathematics paper focuses on problem-solving and logic, while the English paper tests reading comprehension and creative writing.

  • The Interview: Successful candidates are invited for an interview. This is not a test of knowledge, but a conversation designed to gauge a boy's curiosity, interests, and potential fit for the school’s unique culture.
