The 11+ Guide to Whitgift School: Traditional Excellence and Cognitive Depth

Set across a spectacular 45-acre parkland estate in Croydon, Whitgift School is one of the UK’s leading independent day and boarding schools for boys. Renowned for its unparalleled sports facilities, vibrant co-curricular life, and formidable academic results, Whitgift is highly selective.

Unlike many London schools, Whitgift entirely bypasses commercial, automated pre-test platforms, choosing instead to host its own rigorous, paper-based entrance examinations on campus every January.

The Whitgift Written Examination Gauntlet

Securing a coveted Year 7 place at Whitgift requires exceptional cognitive stamina and sharp exam technique. Candidates are tested across three distinct, traditional papers:

  • English: This paper demands sophisticated text deconstruction and deep inference skills through a challenging reading comprehension passage. This is paired with a creative writing task that is heavily penalised for generic, coached plots; the examiners look specifically for structural variation and mature vocabulary.

  • Mathematics: Built to test the absolute upper limits of the Key Stage 2 curriculum. This paper focuses heavily on problem-solving puzzles and logical deductions. Crucially, Whitgift marks the process, meaning boys must be able to lay out clear, comprehensive, handwritten step-by-step proofs.

  • Critical Thinking Skills: A bespoke, age-related assessment unique to Whitgift. This paper does not test curriculum knowledge; instead, it measures raw processing speed, spatial awareness, and non-verbal logical reasoning.

The Dual-Tier Interview Stage

Boys who perform strongly on the written papers are invited back for the final stage. Candidates sit in a face-to-face academic interview with a senior member of faculty.

Note for Parents: At Whitgift, the student interview is immediately followed by a short, integrated meeting between the interviewer and the parents.

How Exceptional Academics Prepares Your Child

Whitgift strictly rewards how a child arrives at an answer, not just the final box they tick.

At Exceptional Academics, our 11+ roadmap for Whitgift focuses heavily on conceptual depth. We train boys to explicitly structure their mathematical work under timed conditions, build the advanced literary syntax required to impress the English marking panel, and prepare families for the unique, integrated interview stage.
