1. The Written On-Site Exams (January)

Unlike schools that filter candidates using pre-tests, UCS invites all registered applicants to sit their entrance examinations on-site in early January. The boys sit two papers:

• English Exam (1 hr 15 mins): Split into a 45-minute Reading Comprehension section and a 30-minute Creative Writing task. The examiners look closely for deep inference skills, original narrative pacing, and technical precision.

• Mathematics Exam (1 hr 15 mins): Split into multiple-choice and short-answer sections covering the Key Stage 2 maths curriculum and advanced, non-routine problem-solving. Showing clear, logical, handwritten workings is absolutely vital to secure method marks.

2. The Conversational Interview Stage

Academic potential is only half the equation at UCS. Following the exams, the school requests references from each candidate's current school, which carry immense weight. Shortlisted boys are then called back for a friendly, conversational interview with a senior teacher to evaluate their interests and intellectual enthusiasm.
