Scholastic Excellence by the Abbey: 11+ Admissions at St Albans School

Dating back to 948 AD and situated adjacent to St Albans Cathedral, St Albans School is an elite independent boys' school (with a co-educational Sixth Form). Known for its STEM output and sports heritage, the school admits approximately 80 boys into the Lower School (First Form/Year 7) each year.

The Two-Tiered Selection Process

St Albans School uses a staged testing framework to shortlist candidates:

• Stage One: The Online Assessment (December): All registered applicants sit an initial computer-adaptive assessment measuring English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This provides an objective standardised measure of a candidate's cognitive processing.

• Stage Two: The Individual Interview (January): Candidates who meet the qualifying benchmark in the online assessment are called back for a one-to-one academic and pastoral interview. The panel evaluates unscripted critical thinking, reading habits, and broader co-curricular passions.

(Note: St Albans also offers an 11+ Deferred Entry pathway for candidates currently at 8-year prep schools who wish to sit the 11+ test in Year 6 but defer their physical entry until Year 9/13+).
