The 11+ Guide to Kingston Grammar School (KGS): Traditional Paper Rigour

Situated along the River Thames in Surrey, Kingston Grammar School (KGS) is one of Greater London’s premier co-educational independent day schools. Celebrated for its stellar academic results, renowned rowing programme, and grounded community, KGS is a top-tier choice for families seeking a balanced co-ed environment.

If you are aiming for Year 7 entry at KGS, there is one crucial detail to keep in mind: KGS does not use digital adaptive pre-tests like the ISEB. Instead, they stick to traditional, paper-based assessments designed to measure deep curriculum understanding, speed, and creative expression.

The KGS Selection Framework

The entrance examination takes place on-site in November of Year 6 and consists of two traditional written papers:

  • English Paper (50 minutes): Split between reading comprehension and a creative writing task. The marking panel looks specifically for inference skills, varied sentence structures, accurate punctuation, and a mature vocabulary.

  • Mathematics Paper (50 minutes): Broadly aligned with the upper limits of Key Stage 2, testing numerical agility and problem-solving. Multi-step word problems near the end of the paper are designed to stretch mathematically gifted pupils.

The Interview & Holistic Review

Shortlisted candidates who perform strongly in the November written papers are invited back for an individual interview in January. KGS designs this as a friendly, conversational session to explore a child's reading habits, personal interests, and logical thinking.

Headteacher Reference: KGS places significant weight on the confidential report submitted directly by your child’s primary school, making strong academic engagement throughout Year 5 and 6 essential.

How Exceptional Academics Prepares Your Child

Because KGS relies on traditional written papers, our preparation strategy focuses on paper-based speed, neatness, and structural accuracy. Exceptional Academics tutors work with pupils to master 50-minute exam stamina, refine descriptive prose, and build the conversational poise needed for the January interview.
