Biography
I'm Joseph, an energetic Londoner with a love of learning! After volunteering and working with the KIDS charity as a teenager, I studied Cognitive Science at the University of Edinburgh, followed by Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Amsterdam. I then went on to work as a neuroscientist at University College London. I have always been fascinated by how intricate processes combine to create something more complex and interesting than the sum of their parts, whether in language, movement, or cognition (thinking about thinking!). My teaching ethos is centred around understanding and supporting each student’s individual thinking and learning style. Through this, I aim to empower students and give them the tools to engage with learning in a way that works best for them.
Teaching Experience
Since 2017, I have worked as both a tutor and after-school teacher, teaching Maths and English classes of up to eight students, both online and in person. I have frequently worked with students with a range of learning differences and disabilities, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and ASD. I always strive to adapt my teaching methods to suit each student, approaching difficult topics in maths and statistics from both theoretical and practical angles. In my previous role as a disability and study skills support worker, I supported students of all adult ages with study techniques, proofreading, exam preparation, and wider life skills. This support was tailored to a variety of learning needs, including dyslexia, ASD, and traumatic brain injuries. During the pandemic, much of this work moved online via Zoom and collaborative platforms such as Google Drive. I supported students across a wide range of subjects, including Maths, Engineering, Social Work, Psychology, Computer Science, Music, and Film.
Interests
My hobbies range from bouldering and football to writing limericks and creating puzzles and quizzes for friends and family. I love the exciting phase of picking up a new interest and embracing the steep learning curve that comes with it, followed by the finer details that emerge when you become deeply engaged in a subject. At the moment, that includes learning Danish, playing the guitar, and baking.
