Biography

My first teaching post was at St Peter’s School, York, a selective boarding and day school with 13+ entry (Common Entrance). I taught A-level and GCSE classes even in my first year (as a Newly Qualified Teacher in 2007-8) and have been teaching up to A-level and IB ever since for 13 continuous years. After two years of teaching, I was promoted to Assistant Head of House.

In 2012, I took the exciting decision to move to Ho Chi Minh City, taking up a post as a teacher of English at the British International School. In addition to an exciting opportunity to experience life in a totally different culture, the role at the school enabled me to develop my teaching in new areas, such as teaching a number of pupils for whom English was a second language, and delivering the IB curriculum at both High and Standard Levels.

Since 2020, I have primarily worked as a self-employed English tutor, specialising in 11+, 13+, GCSE, A-level and the IB. I have tutored hundreds of students in the past six years, aiming to ensure their enjoyment of the subject and academic success.

Teaching Experience

In 2010, I moved down south in order to take up the post of Deputy Head of Department at St Albans (Boys), a high selective day school. Here I was in charge of the co-ordination of the IGCSE curriculum for the English Literature and Language courses.

After a year at the school, I was quickly promoted to Head of Year and held this management post until I returned to the UK in 2015.

Upon returning home, I worked as Head of Department at Uppingham, leading a team of six teachers in this leading independent boarding school and co-ordinating the delivery of Key Stage 3, IGCSE and A-level English. As a 13+ entry school, I gained further experience of the Common Entrance exam as a key part of the admissions process.

During 2017-2020, I was Deputy Head of English at Bablake School, Coventry. I once again co-ordinated the delivery of the IGCSE curriculum and enjoyed working in a highly successful Department in this independent school. In 2019, 87% of our cohort achieved grades 7-9 in IGCSE English Language; 83% achieved 7-9 in IGCSE English Literature.

In addition to my tutoring work, I also teach part-time at Stamford School, an academically selective independent day school, where I have delivered the GCSE and A-level English courses. In summer 2025, in a class of 7, two of the A-level students achieved A*s and continued to study English Literature at top universities.

In the most recent exam session, summer 2025, 10 tutees achieved grade 9s in IGCSE English Literature and Language, along with two grade 8s and two 7s.
